Being a schoolboy

I think what makes it the best academic institution in San Lorenzo is the sense of belonging that you develop from day one.

At the College you form your second family and it becomes your first "home". In addition, the College not only prepares you academically for the most difficult tasks you may encounter in your future career - using minimal resources - but it gives you the confidence to believe in yourself and overcome any obstacle you will encounter in your life.

Self-confidence

What is self-confidence?

Self-confidence implies feeling sure of yourself and your talents, not in an arrogant way, but in a realistic way. This security does not mean feeling superior to others. It is about knowing, internally and with serenity, that you are a capable person.

People with self-confidence:

  • feels more confident than insecure.
  • knows that she can rely on her talents and abilities to cope with whatever may come her way.
  • feels prepared for everyday challenges, such as an exam, a presentation or a competition.
  • thinks "I can" instead of "I can't".
Why is self-confidence so important?

Self-confidence helps us feel prepared to face life's experiences. When we are confident, we tend to move toward people and opportunities, not away from them. And, if things don't work out at first, self-confidence helps us try again.

When a person lacks self-confidence, just the opposite happens. He is much less likely to try new things and to try to communicate with a stranger. If he fails at something the first time, he is very unlikely to try it again. A lack of self-assurance or self-confidence can prevent a person from reaching his or her full potential.

Believe in yourself
Has anyone ever told you that you are smart? Funny? Kind? An artist? A good student? A good writer? An all-around athlete?

When people praise us or recognize our talents, it increases our self-confidence, as long as we believe their words. If you were to doubt or question the good things people say about you, that would be the opposite of self-confidence.

To really feel self-confident, you need to truly believe that you are capable. The best way to develop this belief is to use your talents and skills through learning and practice.

Self-confidence helps us move towards discovering and developing our capabilities. When we see what we are capable of and take pride in our accomplishments, our confidence grows stronger.

How to gain self-confidence
Everyone can do things to gain more confidence. Here are a few tips to try:

Build an attitude of mental confidence. When your inner voice says, "I can't" or "I'm not capable," retrain it to say, "I can," "I am capable." You might also say to yourself, "I know I can learn (or do) this if I give it my full attention."
Be kind to yourself when comparing yourself to others. It is normal for us to compare ourselves to other people. It's a way to understand ourselves and to develop those qualities we admire. But, if comparisons often leave you feeling bad about yourself, this is a sign that you need to do something to improve your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Let go of self-doubt. When we doubt our abilities, we feel inferior, invalid, unworthy or unprepared. This can cause us to avoid people and situations that we might enjoy and that could help us grow.
Take safe risks. Sign up for your school's school board, volunteer to help with a bake sale project, or try out for a team or perform in a show. Raise your hand in class more often. Talk to that hot guy in science class.
Challenge yourself to do something outside your usual comfort zone. Pick something you'd like to do on your own if you were more confident. Give yourself a little push and do it. Once you have done it, choose something else and try it; and keep repeating this same process. Your confidence will grow with each new step forward.
Recognize your talent and let it shine. We are taught to work hard to improve our weaknesses. Sometimes, it's important, like when we get bad grades in school and realize we need to try harder. But don't let working on your weaknesses keep you from getting even better at what you already do well.
Do the right things. Study. Do your homework and schoolwork. Prepare for classes, tests and quizzes. Why? If you keep up with your schoolwork throughout the year, you'll feel more confident on tests and final exams. The best defense against test anxiety and school stress is to keep up with the class and work consistently.
Show yourself as you are. Let others see you as you are, mistakes, insecurities and all. It is easier to overcome an insecurity when we don't feel we have to hide it. Assume and accept your peculiarities instead of trying to be like someone else or acting in a way that is not yours.

It takes courage and self-confidence to be authentic. But, the more authentic we are, the more self-confident we become. Self-confidence increases our self-esteem.
